The Tomato Shell is a tub chair: a deep, rounded shell that wraps the back and sides, with arms built into the curve. The outer shell is white molded plastic, the inside is fully upholstered in red, and the whole thing sits on four bent oak plywood legs. It is a familiar mid-century form that looks right in a red-and-white diner.
Construction
- Molded polypropylene outer shell, white
- Upholstered inner lining over foam, red fabric shown
- Bent plywood leg frame in oak veneer, lacquered
- Felt or nylon glides
The hard outer shell takes the knocks from bags, strollers and chair backs, and it wipes clean. The inner upholstery is where you choose the comfort and the color.
Where it works
Diner chair-side seating, milkshake bars, family restaurants and retro cafe windows. The low arms slide under most 29 to 30 in (74 to 76 cm) tables, and the closed back makes it a good fit for rooms with a lot of traffic behind the chairs.
Options: lining color and material (fabric or contract vinyl; vinyl is the easier choice for family dining), shell color, leg finish (oak, walnut tone, black). Foam can be specified to meet CAL TB 117-2013 on request.
